Daffodils protect themselves by producing a wide range of bio-active compounds, which include Galanthamine. Galanthamine is one of these natural compounds and is a key active ingredient, registered and approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease
Who we are
Agroceutical Products
Agroceutical Products scientific research and development work on the production of Galanthamine (and other compounds) from daffodils grown in the mountains of Wales has been widely supported, including funding assistance from Innovate UK, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), EU and Welsh Govt.
A copy of a case study report published by InnovateUK in September 2018 can be found by clicking here. In addition you can view a video produced by InnovateUK about the work being carried out by Agroceutical Products.
What is
Galanthamine
Formula: C17H21NO3 | Pronounced as (ga lan’ ta meen)
This natural alkaloid is a key active pharmaceutical ingredient registered and approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Galantamine[3] is used for the treatment of cognitive decline in mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease and various other memory impairments.[4][5] It is an alkaloid that has been isolated from Amayrllidacae bulbs and flowers including snow drops and daffodils.
Health Benefits
Licensed treatment for Alzheimer’s
Galanthamine has completed clinical trials and is an approved and licensed treatment for Alzheimer’s disease
Although currently there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, there are a approved medical treatments, which include Galanthamine, that can ameliorate the symptoms or slow down the progression of the disease in responsive individuals.
Information
for Growers
With collaboration from Aberystwyth University and Harper Adams University, Agroceutical Products has developed a scalable and cost-effective method of producing natural Galanthamine from certain varieties of daffodils grown in the uplands of Wales.
Information
for Industry
The Agroceutical Products innovations in growing and processing enable a scalable, environmentally friendly and cost-effective source of bio-active Amaryllidacae alkaloids – including Galanthamine.
Information
for Researchers
The Agroceutical products approach provides a source of natural compounds with known bio-activity to facilitate development of these compounds.
“In 2010 it was estimated that 30 million people had Alzheimer’s worldwide. This was expected to double and then double again to 120 million by 2050.”
